Weddings and Donuts

Perhaps it was the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate. After all, the dress and the kiss were enough to trigger romantic thoughts in almost any female. Whatever the cause, my 13-year-old daughter wanted to plan her wedding. My 16-year-old wanted to join her, but a boatload of homework forced her to postpone her internet browsing until another time.

But the 13-year-old and her friend spent a few hours with me yesterday, planning weddings that are probably about a decade away. I think there's a better than average chance that everything they picked yesterday will change by the time the big day arrives, but it was still a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Dresses, flowers, decorations and food were all sorted out, right down to the boutonnieres the men will wear. I'm happy to report that the girls had impeccable taste. The whole exercise almost made me wish I could go back and do it all again, even though I still like most of what we did back in 1989.

As we were beginning to look, my Savannah said, "Would it be weird to serve donuts?" That's because Savannah loves donuts more than almost anything in the world. If you asked her if she wants a dozen donuts or a dozen $100 bills, she'd be torn. And if she were hungry, she'd probably choose the donuts. And she's almost always hungry.

"I don't know. I've never seen donuts served. It might be kinda strange."

And then a wonderful thing happened. About an hour in and on one of the most beautiful wedding websites I've ever seen, there were donuts--beautiful, interesting, rustic donuts.

Happily, we saved that picture into her wedding file. I think she might have been more thrilled about the donuts than she was about the dress she chose.

My sister in law had a rice krispie treat cake... I say have what you like! :) By the way, I absolutely adore your girls... you can just tell that they're something special... sweet, happy, kind, beautiful... I wish I knew them better and that they could be friends with my Aubrey. I think they'd all get along well. :)

My Savannah loves donuts as well. I'm definitely going to have to tell her about this idea. I think having donuts at a wedding is perfect! Everyone would be happy. (Who doesn't like donuts?) What a fun way to spend an afternoon. You are a cool mom!

Thinking outside the box is always a good idea!! I love the donut idea. Won't it be fun to really help plan our girls weddings?!! In many many years!! I loved planning my wedding when I was young. I would buy a brides magazine every so often just to go through it over and over and over and cut out everything I wanted.
Sadly when it actually came to my wedding, there was a lot of turmoil going on and I fell through on planning the one thing I had planned for years. So many things I would have done different had my circumstances been different. And I knew that then. The one thing I never regret....MY CAKE. I loved my cake. Maybe now I would stack it instead (which would have been nice for you) but I absolutely love it and still have some of the flowers off of it. THANK YOU!!!
I want to do this with Emily.

I love the idea. On the food network last month they had a doughnut off, like Cupcake Wars but doughnuts. Doughnuts are good. There is no denying that.
For my 16th birthday I had a cookie cake because I LOVE cookies.
I would be interested to see the other things she chose. How fun.

I must say that Kayla and I had a blast looking at the wedding file that she made with Savannah. I loved the pictures that she saved and I actually think that some of the things she chose will stick. They are very much a reflection of her. It sure will be fun to see what tastes stay somewhat the same.
All I know is that I was very proud that what she chose was classy and sweet. What else could I expect from she and Savannah...THEY are classy and sweet themselves...unless they are being crazy and silly...I love it!
