What About Robin Thicke?

Robin Thicke's mother was disgusted by Miley Cyrus's antics at the VMA broadcast the other night. She thinks Miley Cyrus is "misbegotten" and wishes she could "unsee" the performance.

Don't we all?

And yet, for the last couple of days all I've heard are comments about Miley Cyrus. We've heard words like sexy, raunchy, embarrassing, and many more that I don't want on my blog. I learned the term twerking, thanks to that performance, and honestly, it's a word I could gladly have died not knowing.

Please don't get me wrong. I think the way Miley behaved is disgusting. I started watching it on Monday because it was literally EVERYWHERE, but couldn't finish the whole thing. It made me sad for these misused child stars who aren't taught values or self-respect or what they're worth as a daughter of God because those who should be teaching them those things are too busy teaching them how to make a spectacle of themselves so they can stay relevant and keep lining the pockets of the "adults" who should be protecting them.

But the parental failures that are Billy Ray and his wife aren't my point here. We all know that her "parents" and her handlers are more concerned about themselves than they are about Miley. She's another lost child who we can only hope finds herself before the damage is irreparable.

My question here is this:

WHY AREN'T PEOPLE DISGUSTED BY ROBIN THICKE?

Seriously. I want to know the answer.

Several years ago I saw Robin Thicke perform on Oprah. He may be talented and some might find him attractive, but all I saw was an older, less attractive, and much creepier version of Justin Timberlake.

And I was right.

This is the tame picture of their performance. Doesn't he look like an adult? Dark glasses, striped clown suit, gold chain. Doesn't he look mature? Like someone sixteen years older than Miley who should know better?

Why didn't he call off this inappropriate performance? Was there not a moment of lucidity during the numerous rehearsals where he thought, "Dang, this isn't cool. She's just a little girl. I should know better. This is degrading... to both of us. This is embarrassing. Do I really want a child licking me or rubbing up against me? Do I really want my wife or mother or anyone with any decency to see this?"

I guess not. He doesn't step away from the skinny little girl whose entourage is throwing her into the pit of vipers. They don't care about her or her reputation, so why should he?

Because if he were a decent man, he would have. He'd have realized that because she's young, she's a girl and she's nearly naked, she'll take enough of the heat to possibly destroy her, but he'll just get to bask in the warm glow of it all.

He's a loser, in my book. And his mom shouldn't be pointing fingers at Miley Cyrus. She should be putting her son in time out and hanging her head in shame that she didn't teach him to have any respect at all for women.

Absolutely correct! I was telling my daughters that I will gag if I hear any of his songs.

He's no gentlemen, that's for certain. On the other hand, this hoopla over the performance is getting ridiculous. Miley's outfit is pretty tame compared to bikinis worn at the beach--which are more string than fabric. Not to mention the items worn and gyrations performed in Victoria Secret commercials or many of the Latin dance numbers on shows like SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE or DANCING WITH THE STARS. I don't hear people predicting that those young women are heading for certain destruction. I don't like all of this in-your-face sexuality, however, I see no reason why Miley's performance is being touted as somehow more offensive than all the others. What's offensive is how much news/radio/blog time this is getting when a thousand people have just been murdered in Syria and we may be heading into another armed conflict. A little perspective please.

I have thankfully not seen what happened, except for a few unpleasant stills. I to learned the word Twe... which I could have gladly not known. Your post is so on point. Here was this 36 year old man in a weird clown suit(I can only imagine a clown in those stripes, and NO_ONE questions his choice~! It took two to dance that misbegotten Tango! Pathetic, so glad we missed the awards.

his tweet after the performance: "that was dope." that says it all-his intelligence, his values, his conscience (or lack thereof)- for me.

You are right he did behave as badly or worse that she did. I haven't actually watched the performance. The clips and pictures were enough to tell me I was not interested. But here is the deal. Most men don't behave honorably unless God or the women they love demand it.I doubt seriously that Robin Thick is a man of God so I also ask myself where was his wife? Why didn't she say anything like I don't want to be with a man who would exploit a child? I don't know the answer but I bet it has something to do with people valuing fame above conscience and morality. Miley is someones daughter. heck Robin might someday have a daughter. I wonder how he would feel about a man doing to her on stage what he just did to Miley?

Our culture is broken and degenerate.

And. Hi. Has Robin's mommy not seen his x-rated "Blurred Lines" music video? Poor sweet baby boy.

That's what I was thinking Janette. He wasn't innocent going into this. He'd already had his "Blurred Lines" music video, which I'd only heard about, but have never seen it..don't want to!! He probably thinks he's up-ping his cool factor w/the young crowd!! To me it's only up-ping his creep factor!!

How do you know he knew what all she was gonna do. It didn't look rehearsed to me. Shes been getting worse the last few years. Also she's not a child. I had a wife and son at 20. Agree about her parents though, evidently did an awful job raising her. My daughter would never act that way, and if she did I wouldn't be around her.

Nice. You seem like a really nice and happy woman (not unlike myself in a number of ways) and that makes me happy for you.

You and your blog came to my attention because Chics on the Right posted your commentary on the Miley Cyrus/Robin Thicke debacle to the Chics page and hence to Facebook. Excellent comments, Karey.

Heretofore I'd only known Cyrus was a cute Disney kid my granddaughters were once thoroughly enamored of, and noticed last week that she'd cut off all her lovely hair into a cute pixie. As for Thicke, I'd never heard of him and still know nothing except for what occurred between the two on stage on stage--a performance that would gag a maggot.

Anyway, good job; nice to meet you. I'll look in on your blog from time to time! :-)

I said the same thing. Robin Thicke had his wife in the audience. I would love to know her thoughts. To be disrespected by the man you are married to must hurt. The saddest part was seeing the video of her mom, who was so proud that he daughter just acted like a tramp in front of millions! She clearly has no respect for herself.
The ceo of viacom thought the performance was amazing. A man running a company that exploits young women with not a 2 nd thought. Disgusting.

One more thing, if you want this kind of stuff to stop, boycott the companies that use rap songs on their commercials. Like it or not rap songs are all about this crap.

Do you notice how people associate intelligence and good behavior with how closely the people they are judging express values and persona that closely match their own? I also find it funny that religion is also brought into play around conversations such as these because "Good (insert religion here) values would have prevented this kind of atrocity!" There is also the age gap to consider. Most folks that are appalled at the performance being discussed here are not from the generation or for that matter the industry that is generating this content. I would say that this performance got the artists EXACTLY what they wanted. Look at all of the rants and rage posts around how disrespectful and inappropriate this performance was! It may only last a month to be talked about, but you were forced to think outside of your box you live your daily life in, even if it provided a distasteful reaction. Food for thought.

Because on So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing With The Stars the couples don't grab their crotchs, their partners groins, lick on them our bend over rubbing their private areas on one another in a sexual way in nude colored latex bikinis. You're sick of hearing about it, so reading/ listening to/watching the blogs, radio shows and news about it.

AMEN, karey!

and to some of your anonymous comments, i have to say one thing...

even if it was not rehearsed, if he was a decent husband and father, he would have distanced himself from her on stage or walked right off the stage. no husband who has any respect for his wife would have 'put up' with that kind of bahavior from another woman.

i know your anonymous readers are just trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but i bet he at least knew what to expect even if he didn't know exactly what moves she was going to make and when.

both are disgusting to me and i feel the most sorry for the wife and daughter of this idiot.

Anyone who thinks he's a victim or surprised by the whole thing should take a look at his video. But don't do it with children in the room. Also, as I was looking up a few things to write this post, I googled his name and looked at images and it's pretty clear to me he's creepy and inappropriate on a regular basis, so I tend not to think he was an innocent bystander.

He always could have taken a step back from her if he didn't like what was happening instead of leering at her and staying close.
Exactly. And what's worse, Robin praised Miley. He wasn't embarrassed at all.

Thank you so much for posting this. I have been thinking the same thing. I think they were both in the wrong. There are so many young women and men who watch MTV and the VMA's. That is not the message we should be sending our children. It 100% gives the wrong idea. I would have turned the channel and then had a talk with my kids about their value. How much God values them. This whole performance, if you can even call it that, makes me incredibly sad and incredibly sick. And Robin Thicke should be getting just as much heat as Miley Cyrus. If that were my hubby..... well, any man who would act that way wouldn't be my husband to begin with.
Jaime Lester said…
And one more thing. I saw a post saying that most of the outrage is coming from older generations and Christians. I would have to disagree with that since I am only 30 and a Christian, and I found it thoroughly disgusting as did my 17 year old niece and plenty of my friends. It has to do with self-respect, not age and beliefs.
Karey said…
I totally agree with you Jaime. I'm part of that older generation, but I'm a mother to four children who don't even watch MTV or listen to that kind of music because they find it disgusting.

Self-respect knows no age. Neither does respect for others and that display showed neither respect for those involved or for their audience.

It made me glad I gave up MTV when they decided rap and teen pregnancy would be the bulk of their lineup.

There have been several people talk about how we should stop talking about this because there are so many other important things going on in the world--the economy, Syria, Benghazi, etc. I'd agree with that sentiment except for one thing.

IT'S BECAUSE TOO MANY OF US HAVE IGNORED THIS KIND OF EROSION OF VALUES IN OUR COUNTRY, THAT OUR CULTURE IS IN THE STATE IT IS.

All those other things are important, but if we don't speak up about our decaying culture, we have to accept part of the blame when America is no longer recognizable as America.

Dont feel sorry for Robin Thicke's wife; she's completely on board with all his garbage!

My 24 yr old non religious daughter found the performance disgusting. It's all about how much outrage and conversation can be generated.self respect is optional.

Miley came to Children's Hospital in DC when she was 15to visit the unit where I worked. I was a nurse on the pediatric oncology unit for 25 years. When I met Miley, she was charismatic and made an effort to talk to all the children. She even continued to communicate with one of the teenagers who was in the last six months of her walk with cancer. I spoke with her at length about childhood cancer and found a young lady who was full of love and empathy for those around her. My own daughter was 14 at the time. I have watched Miley in the 5 years since that visit and have been so saddened by the young woman that I see. The outward demonstrations (and prostrations) show such a deep need to be loved. I will choose to remember the young shining light that I shared a few hours with because I know that is who she is on the inside. I hope she finds her way back to herself-

Dearie, I'm in that age range and so are most my facebook friends. Facebook blew up calling her a Hot Mess etc. I personally don't watch MTV because that's what's on it is raunchy nasty hoes.
Everyone is in flames about this.

A year ago I cut off cable at my house. I don't miss it much, and I am certainly glad I missed this performance. Folks, if you watched this on TV you PAID to be insulted and embarrassed. We PAY to see those sexy VS commercials. When you discontinue watching TV you have time to read, work on hobbies ( or homework) and for a very reasonable amount of money you can buy videos without commercials for your viewing pleasure. Think about it. I save $100.00 per month. That adds up to a lot of money for videos or trips to the book store.

she's not a child! she's 20 years old. i think the little girl/child excuse is not working. also, i agree with what another person said about who knows how this was rehearsed .... he didn't seem really into it to me, and it seems incredibly sloppy and unrehearsed. he could have done much more than what he did. to walk away from her and cause a huge scene on national television ... i think most people wouldn't do that. they would play along and hope it would soon end, which is how i viewed his role in it. she's obviously on drugs .... she needs help, but this is not child exploitation. she's a big girl.

I agree wit your perception of Robin Thicke, a man who is old enough to be her father, really. But you must remember, she is NOT a child. She is a 20 year old woman. At 20, I was married, working a full time job and being responsible. I have self worth, clearly she doesn't. Your article though makes it sound like you have pity on her for her actions because she is a child. Again, 20. Legal adult. Follow her twitter, she is proud of what she did. She wanted to rid herself of the sweet little Hannah Montana persona that is attached to her. I get that, but she could have gone about it differently. She posts racy pics of herself on her twitter, she has no shame. To her, this performance was about showing us all how grown she is. As for Robin...yeah, he's just a disgusting man, who really needs to realize what he did was WRONG on so many levels. He better be ashamed, but again, he's sitting back thinking how cool he is too. Gross.
Karey said…
On the contrary, I don't pity her. I just think the criticism and disgust should be doled out evenly. She's an adult, a misguided, barely out of her youth, adult, but she's responsible for her actions. I just thought Robin Thicke should be responsible for his actions, as well.

In my opinion, they're both desperate attention whores who need to be reined in.
brooke said…
Thank you for saying this. I love your blog because you say it like it is. Amen!

I agree! She is an adult who made her own decision. She's not stupid, she did this for a reason. Look at how many people are talking about her...just like when she chopped her hair. She is getting attention and I'm sure her record sales reflect that as well.
